John Edward Hipkin (Private – service No 29718)

John was born in Surlingham in 1882, to parents Sarah aged 27 and James aged 22.  They moved to Bramerton where in 1906 John’s mother Sarah nee Blanchflower died and is buried.

John married Ellen Maria nee Yallop in April 1907 in Loddon and they lived near the church in Bramerton.  They had twins Doris and Eileen in 1910.

John served in the Norfolk Regiment and saw duty in France and Flanders.  He was killed in action 27 March 1918 at the age of 36 and is buried in France.  It is likely that Private Hipkin was awarded the following campaign medals:

  • British War Medal
  • Memorial Death Plaque.

John’s siblings were;

William Henry (1880) married Ellen Emily nee Osborne in 1901.  They lived in London and William was a policeman who also served in the Army.

Alfred George (1884) served in the army and moved to Bexley Heath

Emma (1886)

Frank (1890) served in the army in France and on 31 March 1916 received a gunshot wound to his leg and ankle.

Family related to John Edward Hipkin still live in Poringland today
