WALISCH |
Alice |
1 |
—– p’ a’i’ab’s Andrie Syr et Alicie Walisch —– Andrie quorr’ a’i’ab’s p’piciet “de” Amen[Translation: [Pray] for the souls of Andrew Syr and Alice Walisch —- of Andrew on whose souls may God have mercy Amen.]NB: Others have translated this as Audrey Syr – which seems unlikely, but the genitive of Andreas (Andrew) is Andree rather than Andrie, which is the genitive of Audrey (n and u being remarkably similar!). Jon Bayliss of the Monumental Brass Society has kindly provided the following information: “While Mill Stephenson’s List of Monumental Brasses in the British Isles gives the first name as Audrie Syr, I suspect that it refers to Andrew Syre, husbandman, of Surlingham. From the lettering style I’d date the brass to around 1450-1479, which may fit in with a man of this name active from 1427 (NRO Phillipps 36425) to 1444 (Close Rolls). Andrew Syre of Surlingham and his wife Maude occur in 1440 (Blomefield, vol 5, p 476, fn 3). Blomefield mentions him again on p 459 of the same volume in a context that must be no later than 1447, the date of Sir John Clifton’s death, and has a footnote that discusses the family on p 469. I can’t find any trace of Alice Walisch/Walsh/Welch.” |
