Overview and dedication

The information contained in these pages has been produced in memory of the Late Peter Hiscocks, Resident and Vice Chairman of Surlingham Parish Council.

It was Peter’s wish to research what information could be found regarding the soldiers of Surlingham who lost their lives in World War 1 and to present the completed file to the children of Surlingham Primary School to commemorate the centenary.

Peter’s information formed the foundation of the work and has been completed by Rachel Hardingham, in some cases illustrating how hard life was in 1914 – 1918.
Information has been taken from a variety of sources e.g. census, military service and hospital records, passenger lists, etc.

In the course of the research a soldier was identified Alfred James Tooley who had not been acknowledged before. His name has been added to the roll of honour on the Lychgate at St Mary’s church, Surlingham.
