On Saturday, 17th October, Surlingham was proud to welcome Rowena, a descendant of Susannah Holmes. Susannah Holmes came from the village and is famous for being on the First Fleet to Australia. Also visiting was Rowena’s cousin Chris who is descended from Elizabeth Pulley from Hethersett who was also on the First Fleet.
Dr Jan Pitman, from Norfolk Museums met and talked to them about the historical context of their ancestors. They then visited Surlingham Ferry and Coldham Hall Tavern. Photos show Jan with them at the church, Sonia from the Ferry presenting them with a book about Surlingham and Sam Brown, long term village resident presenting them with a poster of the Yare Navigation Race at Coldham Hall.
