What’s black but should also be green?

…. Charcoal.

Summer has arrived and the BBQs are GO!

Is your chosen charcoal sustainably produced, carbon neutral and locally sourced?

Alderfen Marshes lumpwood charcoal is produced in Surlingham using wood sourced sustainably during conservation work on the marshes (nothing goes to waste).

A mix of alder, goat-willow and silver birch wood gives a smoke-free steady burn with an even heat.

Lumpwood charcoal for BBQs is available in 2kg and 4kg bags for £8.00 and £15.00
Natural charcoal for fire-bowls and outdoor ovens is available in 800g packs for £4.00

Find us at the Surlingham School Fete on Saturday 18th of June (try our wild teas too!) or drop us a line to order. We’ll deliver within Surlingham, Bramerton and Rockland St Mary free of charge.

Payment can be made via PayPal before delivery or cash on delivery

Want to see how it’s made?

Keep an eye out on Surlingham.org for ‘Charcoal Evenings’ coming soon; we’ll be happy to show you how the charcoal is made (we use two different methods), look at where the wood comes from and how it is sustainably managed.

SAVE THE BELLS OF ST MARY’S

As the longest-reigning monarch in British history celebrated seventy years on the throne, Surlingham residents were celebrating a bit of their history too. At the evening service for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Sunday 5th June, John and Christine Glynn presented a cheque for £3,000 to St Mary’s church tower repair fund.

They recently produced “Surlingham in Time: Meet the Medieval Ancestors”, a carefully researched book about the village and its churches from 1066 to the end of the first Queen Elizabeth’s reign in 1603.

Generous sponsorship from villagers meant that all the proceeds from the sale of the book could be donated to St Mary’s, with its round tower housing historic 14th century bells in dire need of urgent repair, to the tune of £130,000.

Donate £20 to save St Mary’s, and in return receive a piece of Surlingham history.

Surlingham in Time: Meet the Medieval Ancestors is available from:

  • The Ferry House
  • Yare Valley Farm Shop

  • Post Office Shop, Rockland St Mary
  • The Water’s Edge, Bramerton

Police Connect – Rogue Trader Alert

In partnership with Norfolk County Council Trading Standards, we are warning residents after receiving reports of doorstep cold callers in the Hethersett area.

In the incident a resident was cold called at their property by three males who offered to ‘pressure wash and seal’ their driveway. Initially the resident agreed to the work with the cold caller quoting £140. Having undertaken a small amount of work one of the males then stated to the resident that the job was ‘going to cost more’. This was then repeated during the work with the cold caller eventually demanding more than £500.
The cold callers were seen to be using a white Ford Transit with red and black sign writing.

We always advise:
• NEVER deal with cold callers looking to undertake work on or around your property
• NEVER agree to have work done by somebody who is ‘just passing’ or take their word that it needs to be done at all
• NEVER allow a cold caller access to your home, roof or gardens even if they are offering to do tasks for free or a small fee
• NEVER pay for work before it is completed
• When looking to have work done on or around your property ONLY deal with reputable companies you have researched and chosen yourself and have obtained a written quotation from before commencing the work.

Anyone sighting these cold callers in Norfolk or concerned about Rogue Trader activity please contact us through our partners the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 or Norfolk Constabulary via 101.
If you feel intimidated or sight a cold caller and are concerned for vulnerable neighbours call 999
