I’m sure you will all be aware of the major benefits of tree planting as a means of combating climate change, protecting wild-life and rural heritage, and enhancing peoples’ well-being. Governments across the world have begun to heed the call for large-scale planting of trees and we urgently need to step up tree planting across England. It would be marvellous if Surlingham could do its bit to help. The South Norfolk Tree Warden Network are once again operating their tree planting scheme supplying free British native tree species saplings for approved planting schemes which enhance the landscape and bring public benefit, the costs being generously supported by Busseys.
I’m very interested to hear of suggestions for tree planting in and around the village and would need to submit an application on behalf of the parish by the end of September. The main conditions are that there must be public access to newly planted trees or they must be readily visible from a road or public footpath, and that landowners’ permission needs to be obtained in writing, and there needs to be a commitment both to planting the trees and maintaining them over the first few years. The deadline for submission of a planting scheme is the end of September with trees to be collected and planted in November. Further details are available on the South Norfolk Tree Warden Network web-site click here for access. Please use contact us with any proposals you may have by 21st September. Many thanks, Cathy Terry, Tree Warden for Surlingham

September has just arrived! All getting back to normal routines and school runs! And as last year, we are bringing to our Patisserie a special day dedicated to our amazing four legged friends: doggies!
After last year’s success, we had to repeat it again.
Date: 29th September! Bring your dog down, let us take a photo of him/her/them, we will share it on our Facebook page and the lucky one that gets more likes wins an excellent Xmas hamper worth of £75 full of Xmas goodies for owners and doggies.
On the day we will have stalls selling all dogs things including cakes and cookies from the amazing Little Blue Cupcakery!
So be quick and put this on your diary!

Surlingham Broad Creative Writers Group meets on the first Monday of each month, 7.00pm – 9.00pm. If you are a fellow ‘scribbler’ or think creative writing could be a new interest or hobby – come along and see if this is for you.
We are a community-based group that includes writers of adult fiction, children’s fiction and picture books, memoir writers, poets, script writers and those who just enjoy playing with words. Some members are beginners, others are more experienced, and some of us are published writers. The group offers the opportunity to share writing experiences, get feedback, develop and experiment with technique, discuss upcoming writing competitions and submissions, share information about useful resources, develop writing confidence and hopefully get inspiration. Meetings include short practical writing exercises and offer an optional prompt for writing to share during the next meeting. We also organise writer’s workshops and informal literary events locally.
For any further details e.g. venue of next meeting (it varies), information about future workshops, please contact Karen, thatkarenfrancis@gmail.com
