Since the publication of their book Second House on Left in Surlingham five years ago, John and Christine Glynn have been researching the history of the village from the Norman Conquest of 1066 to the time of the first Queen Elizabeth in 1600.
Now the fruits of their discoveries have been put into a full-length book entitled Surlingham in Time: Meeting the Medieval Ancestors.
As well as interviews with a selection of vicars of the period, they take an imaginary tour of the area in 1441, find out how life changed here as Normans took control of Anglo-Saxon Norfolk, trace the fortunes of the lords of the manor, and take an inside look at the poverty and prosperity of the Elizabethan village community.
The two churches played a pivotal role in medieval life. St Mary’s is still with us after a thousand years, while the evocative ruins of St Saviour’s are a cherished heritage. But now the round tower of St Mary’s with its 14th century bells is in dire need of renovation, to the tune of £130,000.

We’ve had a fresh delivery of beef at the farm shop! Lots of different steaks, joints and mince available as well as burgers and sausages.
Christmas Trees will also be available from tomorrow 🙂
With exactly one month to go until Christmas the time has come and we are officially GO for gritting across the whole county this evening!
Now, please do remember that while we’ll be treating the 2,200 miles of Norfolk roads we normally cover, there is always a chance for ice to form later into the night or early morning, so be cautious and mindful of other road users.
Before setting out make sure to wrap up warm and be aware pavements may get a little icy. If you’re driving or biking, check your vehicle is ready for the cold.

The Parish Council are asking for bids from residents’ keen to offer a new home for the old telephone kiosk.
The kiosk is in need of a considerable amount of TLC. The paint has already been purchased and will be included.
The successful bidder will be responsible for disconnecting any electricity supply and removal of the kiosk.
If the kiosk is not found a home in Surlingham it will be disposed of. Email if you are interested.
