Another Road Obstruction – Pratts Hill

You may already be aware of the various posts placed on the Surlingham Noticeboard Face Book page regarding obstructions left in the road around the vicinity of the Manor and Surlingham Lodge. These consisted of large tree branches or blocks of concrete placed with the sole intention of causing an accident.

This evening the tree below was left blocking the top of Pratts Hill and has now been moved.

The police have been notified and will increase patrols around the village. They are aware of the other incidents.

This is extremely irresponsible and could result in serious injury.

I would urge anyone who has any information that could lead to a prosecution to either contact Norfolk Police on 101 or give information anonymously online to Crime Stoppers.

CycSpresso has arrived in Surlingham

You may have been fortunate enough to sample the free coffee and brownies that were provided to enthusiastic customers on 1st January 2021! It provided a welcome intervention to those trying to shake off 2020 – the sight of Neil Robertson stood at Ferry Corner with his electric coffee trike brewing, I’m led to believe, “some of the finest coffee in Norfolk or, if not, almost certainly Surlingham”, was hard to pass by.

Neil said “Cycpresso has been a project that has combined my love of cycling and coffee. The original tricycle delivered ice cream around the cobbled streets of Cambridge ten years ago. I bought it a couple of years ago and have designed and built it up since then. However, the weight of the coffee making equipment made cycling Cycspresso difficult, so I decided to add an electric motor. It then became important to develop the ‘green’ credentials of the trike so not to be reliant on the usual diesel generator for power. So, with a little help from my friends (Phil Reeve!), Surlingham’s first ever E-Barista project has arrived – an electric powered tricycle, providing quality coffee from fresh (ethically sourced) beans to your doorstep!”

To make it all the more inviting, Neil provided free homemade brownies with each cup!

And what next for CycSpresso?

Neil said “ The feedback from the first outing was great! People said it brought a much-needed smile and provided an opportunity for people to stand and talk whilst drinking, what I hope, was a really good coffee”.

“Obviously conditions have now changed with lock-down. However, as a take- away service, I would love to be able to keep the momentum going. It’s a small project and I’d really welcome people’s feedback and ideas. So the plan is to take CycSpresso around the village at weekends for a few hours, (weather permitting), a time when people may want to grab a coffee to keep warm whilst out enjoying a socially distanced walk”.

Neil said; “ I have a Facebook and Instagram page and would welcome any suggestions that people may have. I’m planning to start my E-coffee round on Sunday 16th. Free coffees and brownies (observant of guidelines) for the village! Keep an eye on Facebook for times and places where I’ll be around Surlingham. If you want a direct delivery to your door then please drop me a message!”

Watch this space! Good luck Neil!

Police Connect: Community update – Covid-19

Surlingham Parish Council would like to wish all residents a Happy New Year.

As we begin 2021 the councillors would like to express their appreciation and thank the residents and businesses in Surlingham who have gone above and beyond in the last year to support the community, and now we are in lockdown again will continue to offer support where it is needed.

Clive Evans and Sarah Broom recruited and organised the band of volunteers who collected prescriptions and shopping for those who were shielding or less able and not forgetting a big thank you to the volunteers themselves who gave up their time to do so.

Paul and Louise Swift organised a virtual quiz via Zoom. Clive and Sarah organised the ‘Stay at Home street Party to Commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day’ which was supported by many residents who put up decorations, dressed in clothing typical of the era and held tea parties in their gardens.

Thanks, must also go to the Ferry House, Yare Valley Farm Shop and Teles Patisserie all have played a part either providing take away meals, increasing their stock of the essentials, providing a delivery service, and generally helping wherever and whenever they could.

Last but by no means least thank you to the Reverends Nick and Helen Garrard who have enabled parishioners to take part in services either via Zoom or video recordings. In May Nick also started a regular weekly virtual Art Café to give residents with an interest in art the opportunity to discuss and learn more about the subject.

This list is not exhaustive, to the many residents who have and will continue to support their neighbours during these worrying times – Thank You

Please note during this current period of lock down the Ferry House will remain closed. Sonia will reopen as soon as she is permitted, and the safety of staff and customers can be assured.

South Norfolk District Council – Refuse Collection Calendars 2021

South Norfolk District Council have decided that hard copy bin calendars will no longer be provided to individual residents for several reasons.  In the main, collection dates have not changed so calendars are not needed, there is a cost both in terms of printing, and resource in terms of delivery and there is a general move to more information being online which also means that any changes can instantly be amended.

To ensure that residents are kept informed of waste collection dates, they can use the customer account functionality on the South Norfolk Council website.  Once a resident is registered or logs in to their respective property, their next waste collection dates are displayed for rubbish, recycling, and garden waste (if they subscribe) but they also have the option to print their individual bin calendar directly from the webpage. The utilisation of live data also provides a contingency if any of the waste services are affected by bad weather during the Winter period to update residents on any potential collections date changes.

If an individual resident does not have access to the internet, they can call the Depot’s customer care team on 01508 533830 to confirm their collection dates or have a printed calendar sent to their property.
