There was a small unofficial gathering at the Lychgate this morning. We observed the two minutes silence and the wreath was presented by Val Parritt on behalf of the village.

Following my previous message about Remembrance Sunday, here is this year’s Remembrance Sunday video, which includes the two minutes’ silence and Act of Remembrance.

Here’s what’s happening during the rest of the month.

• We offer care, listening and support. Please contact us if there’s anything we can do.
• Our churches and churchyards will be open daily for personal prayer and reflection.
• Weekly service videos (please join our circulation list or find the link on Rockland Churches Face Book page)
• Live worship on Zoom. Join us for Night Prayer at 9pm, Mondays to Thursdays (please phone 01508 538014 for a recurring invitation)
• Children’s activity packs in church porches or posted on application later this month
• Readings and prayer sheets. These will be produced most weeks and are intended to support local residents who aren’t online. Please send us contact details – we will post them or leave in church porches for collection

Last month I posted a request for volunteers willing to help deliver the ElevenSays and Surlingham Newsletters but I have managed to mislay the contact details of the person who said they would deliver to Mill Road. 🤔

The Surlingham Charity was set up in 1909 and modified by the Charity Act 2006 for the relief of financial hardship, either generally or individually for people living in the village of Surlingham.

The charity can provide assistance for recreation or other leisure occupation for individuals who have need by reason of their youth, age, infirmity, disability or financial hardship, with the aim of improving their conditions of life.

If you have any need for help from this charity by reason of any of the above, please contact The Clerk to the Trustees, Diane Corbin, 12 Church Meadow, Alpington NR14 7NY or by phone on 01508 495493.

The deadline is 24th November. All cases will be treated with complete confidentiality.

The Surlingham Volunteers Scheme which was so effective during the first lockdown is returning and will help to deliver food and medicine to local residents who have no other means of support.

If you need help, then contact one of the coordinators listed in the accompanying leaflet below. The leaflet will be printed and delivered to every household in the Parish over the next couple of days.

The scheme is supported by the local Church and the Parish Council.

Dear all,
I hope you are keeping well.
Arrangements for this year’s very different Remembrance Sunday reflect where we are as a nation and also what is happening in the wider world. However, it remains a time to reflect, give thanks for the sacrifices made by those who came before us to defend freedom, and to commit ourselves to peace and reconciliation today.

The Royal British Legion have asked that rather than gather as normal to keep the 2 minute’s silence, this should be done in our homes, on our doorsteps or in our gardens. Their theme for 2020 is ‘Coming Home’, as we protect others by our decisions and actions today, just as servicemen and women protected our homes in different contexts. The RBL’s guidance on remembrance can be found here

Due to social distancing, it hasn’t been possible to run the poppy appeal in the usual way, but the RBL’s vital work must continue. Please may I encourage you to give as generously as you can. The link to the RBL donation page is here

What is happening locally? All our churches and churchyards will be open during the day for those who wish to pay their respects, lay wreaths or other tributes. There will also be a short act of remembrance in Claxton churchyard at 10:45. You are welcome to visit the memorials, but please remember to maintain 2m social distancing at all times, wear masks inside church and do not touch any tributes apart from those you have brought.
