In these challenging times, we, as bakers, feel the responsibility of feeding everyone. But beyond that we are trying to help as many people as we can either with our order and delivery system or doing shopping for those who can’t or just ring to check on people. Every little help counts even if it’s a voice on the other side of the phone.
Thinking of this, we thought we need to thank the NHS for the outstanding job they have been doing for all of us. And because reaching the hospital is in itself not an easy task, we thought we should support our surgery. So over the weekend and until Wednesday we are trying to have a huge box of goodies to take to the surgery (Heathgate this time)as a gesture of appreciation. Even surgeries lack things such as toilet roll or gloves and even fruit tea and coffee for nurses doctors and staff. We know it’s hard times for all but can’t we all give something to the NHS? If you have something extra, we are collecting goods at the patisserie. Thank you for your kindness.

In the meantime, our system of orders, collection, take away and deliveries are still in place. Be aware that we are only doing baked goods (bread and cakes), some light meals and soup for those who can’t leave the house or if there is a birthday around we can deliver a cake too.

Norfolk Constabulary continues to follow its commitment to engage, explain, encourage and enforce the government’s measures restricting people’s movements.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey said: “We police by consent in this country, and my officers follow a very fair four-step escalation model with the public and businesses.

“Our focus is to reassure, inform and engage with people so they understand why these restrictions are in place. Our communities are looking out for each other and listening to the government’s message to stay at home, and I thank them for that. Complying with these regulations is an absolute priority to save people’s lives and protect our NHS.

“We will always try to disperse people rather than use enforcement but it’s also right that we act against the few who choose to break the rules and disregard these measures, and put people’s lives at risk.”

Officers were given the powers on Thursday (26 March 2020) to fine people who refuse to stay at home and go outside without ‘reasonable excuse’ following the introduction of government measures to tackle Covid-19.

To date (Tuesday 31 March 2020), Norfolk Constabulary has used its formal powers only once following an incident in Great Yarmouth yesterday morning (Monday 30 March 2020) when a woman repeatedly ignored officers’ requests to return home on three separate occasions. The woman, who is aged in her 40s, was reported for the offence and will receive a summons to attend magistrates’ court in due course.

Mr Bailey added: “The majority of people are already making sacrifices to save lives, and we continue to urge everyone to follow the advice that is designed to keep us all safe.

“If people see others flouting the rules we ask that they exercise common sense. We will not be able to dispatch officers for minor infringements. Clearly mass gatherings of people are not a minor infringement and we want to know about these so we can deal with them.

“It’s also important to add that people who deliberately spit and cough on emergency workers as well as members of the public will be dealt with robustly. This is an offence and it will be treated as assault.

“I’d also take this opportunity to pay tribute to all our officers, staff and Special Constables who, alongside emergency workers, NHS staff and other key workers, are on the frontline. They are doing outstanding work in challenging times.”

People are being encouraged to report non-urgent crimes or concerns via online reporting here.

Targeting elderly residents

Norfolk Police are urging elderly residents to be vigilant following a number of reports in which callers are pretending to be police officers.

Earlier this evening (Friday 27 March) an elderly woman from the Belton area in Great Yarmouth received a call at approximately 7.30pm from a man posing to be a police officer. The woman was asked to take part in a survey. When the woman questioned the legitimacy of the call, he became very aggressive.

Anyone with information should contact Norfolk Police on 101 quoting incident number 415 of today’s date (27 March 2020).

Residents are reminded that neither your bank nor the police or National Crime Agency will ever ask you to withdraw money or purchase items. In addition:

• Your bank or the police will never ask for your PIN, bank card or bank account details over the phone – never give these details to anybody.
• Neither the police nor the banks will send a courier to collect money from you.
• Always request Photo ID and if unsure call the police.
• If you’re asked to telephone a bank, then always do it on a different phone to the one you were contacted on. Fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ring tones, hold music and a recorded message down the phone so the victim believes they are making a call to a legitimate number. Use a friend or neighbour’s telephone instead.
• Never download any software suggested by caller.
• Do not rush into complying to the scammers demands/requests.

Friends, family, carers and neighbours are asked to spread the word to ensure everyone is aware of this scam and what they should do.
