As a newcomer to Surlingham I was very impressed by the gathering at Tuesday’s Parish Council meeting. A strong sense of care for the community shone through the discussion, especially for those who will go through difficult and lonely times in times ahead. There was also a sharing of practical wisdom about what could be achieved.
The parish church would like to support this important work and offers four ingredients:
Hope – finding strength in a common cause and looking beyond the present crisis to the future
Kindness – sharing Christ’s compassion through word and action. Sometimes the small things we do have the biggest impact
Prayer – asking God to bless our community and those in greatest need
Service – using our time and ability to help and support

For the time being it won’t be possible to hold public services, but the work of the Church happens in other ways. St. Peter’s church will be open daily for visitors to reflect and pray. There are lovely walks around there- why not call in? There is a prayer tree in church where you’re welcome to leave messages and prayers. I will come in from time to time to pray over them. A weekly sheet with prayers, readings and a short service will be available by e-mail or post if you would like a copy.
For Mothering Sunday (March 22nd) we will video a short service that can be viewed on the Rockland Churches Facebook page (if we can figure out how to do it!) Palm crosses will be left in church at the start of Holy Week (April 5th) and can be delivered to homes. To break through any sense of isolation, we suggest lighting a candle at 6pm each day, knowing that others are doing the same.

It is with regret that the ‘Riverbank Spring Clean 2020’ litter pick that was due to take place on Saturday 18th April 2020 is unfortunately cancelled this year due to the current circumstances. It is not going to be postponed to later in the year as the vegetation of the footpaths will be too overgrown which will make picking the litter very difficult and will cause too much disturbance to the wildlife.
However, on a more positive note if anyone needs a little bit of fresh air and wants to incorporate cleaning the litter up as they walk then there is litter-picking equipment available in Surlingham to use all the time. If you would like to borrow some litter picks then please let me know. Either ring 07763151337 or email
I would also like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the litter pick this year and in previous years and we hope to resume with the annual litter picks again next year.

The Surlingham Coronavirus community assistance scheme, is now up and running. The scheme coordinates 15+ volunteers and will arrange for the delivery of food and medicine to local residents who have no other means of support.
The scheme can be contacted by using one of the phone numbers listed in the accompanying leaflet below. The leaflet will be delivered to every household in the Parish over the next couple of days.
The scheme is supported by the local Church and the Parish Council.

We at Coldham Hall would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has shown real community support over the last few days, from everyone who has come down and had a drink or bought gift cards to those who have simply rung up to make sure we are doing okay, it all means so much to myself and all the staff here.
We are currently organising a delivery for the end of the week with one of our main catering suppliers to bring in essentials, stocking us with plenty of the everyday items the supermarkets are starting to struggle with. We are happy to deliver around the area with anything that can help at this time, be it cooked meals or supplies. If we can, we will help. In the meantime if anyone is struggling for their supplies, call us! We may have somethings in stock already so please call!
I will always be onsite, so regardless of the pub being open the supplies will still be available and deliverable and unfortunately ill have the time to help!
The pub is still open and shall remain so until we are forced to close. Having kept the upmost hygiene and asking anyone coming to take there own precautions we feel we are still a safe environment, but we must stress that the last thing we want is to spread anything further, so anyone who feels they must support a local business but cant take the risk, please don’t feel obliged!
