Surlingham

It was standing room only at a packed St Mary’s Church on Wednesday evening to witness the induction of our new rector Nick and the licensing of Helen as assistant priest.

The service was conducted by the Bishop of Thetford, the Rt Revd Dr Alan Winton assisted by the Archdeacon, the Ven Steven Betts, the Rural Dean, the Revd David Owen and attended by many clergy from the diocese. It was sincere yet both formal and light hearted.

The congregation remained behind for teas, coffees, homemade cakes and nibbles.

Many thanks to everyone involved in its organisation: Pippa Thurlow, Gillian Stiff, Diane Corbin and members & churchwardens of all the Benefice PCCs, Helen Webster for the flowers, David Driver, Alex Buckenham, Tony Ridley, Christine Hiscocks for car parking and Tim Smith, Richard Atkins, Mike & Tom Stiff, Derry Kelleher and Clive Evans for car parking duties, the many people who baked cakes and brought nibbles, Sue Stiff and the rest of the kitchen elves, Janet House, Brenda Packham, David Wheeler, Joy Miller & Derry for the bell ringing

We’re delighted that wild water-mint tea, grown locally on Alderfen Marshes in Surlingham, is now available at Yare Valley Farm Shop as loose-leaf tea, in convenient tea bags or mixed with wild nettle for a rich, earthy twist.

Why is it green? … (other than the obvious)

• The mint grows naturally on Alderfen Marshes, thriving in the freshwater tidal environment, enabling us to produce tea sustainably from naturally growing plants. The mint is cut (by hand!) during Autumn conservation work, enhancing the diverse wetland habitat.

• If food-miles are your thing this clocks in at one mile from production to farm shop. Commercial mint tea commonly comes from Morocco (Marakech to Surlingham is 1983 miles)

Open as usual today but take care and bring your wellies as the water is across the lane. High tide was at 7:26am here so it should be going down! High tide will be 8:38pm.

A mobile phone has been lost on the road somewhere between Surlingham and Norwich on 17th January 2020 It was left on the car roof and has fallen off!
