Many residents already enjoy visiting Surlingham Staithe as do tourists taking a diversion from the Wherryman’s Way to explore the public footpath from Ferry Road.

The Staithe is a beautiful place to just sit and enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside or to go pond dipping looking for water bugs, tadpoles etc or spotting dragon flies.

Currently, the situation is that boats are stored on the ground and they tend to ‘spread’ during the more popular seasons as more boats are left there. Also the area has been closely mown for many years and this practice has extinguished the natural flora and fauna that previously grew and lived there.

The recommendations are:

1 – the provision of a simple wooden storage rack to enable the boats/canoes to be raised off the grass and concentrated in one area.

2 – the provision of a picnic table

3 – to continue to mow the recreation area but leave remaining grassland to grow taller and thereby encourage wild native plant species to return, seed and thrive. As the rewild area develops insects, butterflies and wildlife will return.

We shall be serving Portuguese & French cheese along with grapes, bread, olives and amazing Portuguese wine – Porto wine and Moscatel will also be available.

There will be a public meeting on Thursday 9 January 2020 at Surlingham Parish Hall chaired by Norfolk County and South Norfolk District Councillor Vic Thomson to hear about the work on the Wherryman’s Way footpaths in Bramerton, Surlingham and Rockland St Mary.

There will be a presentation by Norfolk County Council Senior Trails Officer, Russell Wilson with time during the evening for questions from the public.

Surlingham Parish Hall will be open from 7:00 pm so that attendees have an opportunity to look at the information boards. The meeting will start at 7:30 pm.

All of those with an interest are very welcome to attend.

A big thank you to all those who bought raffle tickets or donated prizes for the charity quiz at The Ferry last night.   The pub was packed and a good time appears to have been had by all.  The event raised about £250 for St Martins, the local housing charity.

Thanks in particular to the local businesses who donated prizes: Teles patisserie, Yare Valley Oils and The Ferry.

Just to remind you that the quiz for St Martins (homeless charity) starts at 8pm at the Ferry on Friday.  No entry charge but there’ll be a raffle. Prizes include:

A voucher to spend at Teles’ Patisserie and cafe in Surlingham.

A voucher to spend at The Ferry

A selection of Yare Valley Oils, produced in Surlingham

and lots of chocs and bottles.
