There will be a St Patrick’s Day quiz at the Ferry House this coming Saturday 17th March.

A typical Irish menu will be provided (details to follow) and a chance to win a crock of gold!

It’s sure to get busy so don’t forget to book your table with Sonia and her team at The Ferry on 538659 to finish eating before the quiz begins at 8pm, or just join us for the quiz.

Come as a team (not too large please as we haven’t much gold) or we’ll find you some team mates on the night.

No charge for the quiz but there will be a collection for Marie Curie. The charity funds nurses who provide care and support for terminally ill people in their own homes. Marie Curie is a national charity that operates locally; ie ALL money collected in Norfolk, funds nurses in Norfolk. 

Our next work session on the Community Orchard will be 10.00 on Saturday March 24 when the task in hand will be fencing the area to give added protection to the the trees from hungry deer and rabbits.  Everyone welcome so if you’d like to come along to lend a hand that would be great.

Norfolk residents are being urged to be vigilant following a number of reports of suspected cold callers operating in the Norfolk area.

It’s after police have received five reports of men cold calling at addresses in the Stalham and Potter Heigham areas asking for money or offering goods for sale door to door.

In most instances a male has knocked on victim’s doors and has stated he was either ‘an ex prisoner’ or ‘out of work’ and needed money or was selling cleaning products.

Chief Superintendent Mike Fawcett would like to remind householders to be vigilant.

He said: “Please remember you do not have to open your door to cold callers.

“Close and lock your back door before answering the front door. If you do not recognise the person, speak through the closed and locked door.

“If they are selling something or offering to do any work on your house or garden, tell them you are not interested and ask them to leave. If they persist tell them you will call the police and call us on 999. If you have any doubt – keep them out.”

Colleagues at Norfolk County Council’s Trading Standards advise that residents should never agree to buy goods from, or have work done, by someone that calls unannounced at their door, or approaches them on the street.

Often such traders don’t provide full names, trading addresses or contact telephone numbers, resulting in it being virtually impossible to trace them if there are any problems with the work or goods.

Anyone feeling threatened by a cold caller should call 999 immediately. Anyone with information about suspected rogue traders should contact police on 101, Trading Standards on 03454 040506 or alternatively Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped to tidying up our riverbank. The turnout was much better than I had expected with a staggering 23 volunteers. It was a great success as we managed to collect over 5 tonne bags of rubbish from the riverbank, 2 of which were recyclables.

I would also like to thank the Surlingham Ferry for there hospitality afterwards, Longwater Gravel for donating the tonne sacs as well as South Norfolk Council, the Broads Authority and the RSPB for donating litter pickers and for be so helpful in the process of me organising the event.

Although it was a success there was one alarming factor that I feel all volunteers became aware of and this was the shocking amount of syringes and needles present along the riverbank. Some of our volunteers collected a number of them but many do still remain scattered around. Please be aware of this in the future when walking along the river, although the risk of harm is low it is still there and needs to be considered.

Once again a huge thank you for everyone’s support and for making the litter pick so successful, I hope to see you all again next year.

Mothering Sunday is fast approaching us, we only have a few tables left for any last minute bookings!

But in the meantime we are celebrating National Pie Week! We have a few special pies on the menu today and will have a full selection over the weekend! Ranging from a delicious pork, chorizo and red pesto pie to a beautiful Beef Wellington!
