Recently someone attending an event at Padmaloka said that they had heard the distinctive call of a bittern in the area and we were wondering if anyone else had one or if this was simply a one-off? It would be great to know if we do indeed have them nesting nearby. Do leave a comment at the bottom of the page if you have heard one..
You can hear the sound of a bittern in this field recording taken in 1966 at Hinkling Broad:

They’re very hard to see, but here’s a picture of one.

I am pleased to be able to report that the defibrillator is now back in full working order and East of England Ambulance Service have been informed.
It has been out of service for some time because the battery was no longer holding a charge also the unit had been used and the pads had not been replaced.
Poringland First Responders have generously replaced the battery and pads as a gesture of goodwill because of the donations the residents of Surlingham have made to their service.
From now on the unit will be checked on a weekly basis so any issues can be addressed promptly.
If you are required to use it please notify me as soon as is practicable after the event as I have a further set of replacement pads in my possession.
For our peace of mind this vital piece of life saving equipment needs to be fully functioning all the time.
