Surlingham

Flooding and Finance dominated the meeting.

Norfolk County Council’s contractor will be in the village on Tuesday 23rd 2018 to extract debris, flush drains and gullies. Following high tides and heavy rainfall the boardwalk by the Gun club is now dangerous NCC are aware.

The Parish Council agreed a modest 3% increase to the Precept, the funding provided by SNDC to the Parish Council. This will increase the Parish Councils portion of the Council Tax by 22p for a Band D property.

Unfortunately, due to some serious issues with our water supply we are unable to open today and we hope to re-open as soon as possible. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused, and will keep you posted for our re-opening.

Surlingham and the No 85 bus service jumped the first hurdle as Councillors yesterday voted to scrap the proposed £500,000 cut to the £2.7m bus subsidy.  No doubt the public response helped.

According to the EDP, the Policy and Resorces Committee will have the final say when it meets on the 29 January 2018. However, it is thought unlikely that the proposed cuts will go ahead.

Keep those fingers crossed Surlingham.

I am keen to further explore the history of the village.

Some years ago Jack Points published a book on the history of Surlingham. I feel sure we can build on this and that there must be many people with knowledge of our past who could contribute to such a project.

The potholes in the Carnser have been repaired on a temporary basis pending a permanent resurfacing of the parts affected later in the year.

Thanks to those who organised the materials and to the team from the Coldham Hall Sailing Club who were able to give up their Saturday morning and engage in some hard graft and also to our Bosun David for the use of the whacker plate.

Also thanks to Harry and the Tavern for providing the coffee and sausage rolls at the end of our work. That was much appreciated by all.

Thank you so much to all the people who supported the Ferry Quiz for St Martin’s housing either by coming along last night, or by the very generous donation of raffle prizes.

The pub was full and it is fair to say that a lively evening was had by all. Congratulations to winning team, ‘Waitrose Order 89’ for their fishy expertise and to Claxton Rare Breeds who came second, boosted by their knowledge of South and Central America.

The raffle raised £120 and we collected a further £150 in donations.
